Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena said the rift between India Block allies, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Congress, contributed to the Bharatiya Janata Party's landslide victory in the Delhi Assembly Elections 2025.

In the electoral contest for the 70-member Delhi Assembly, the BJP won 48 seats, knocking the Arvind Kejriwal-led party out of power in the capital. The AAP suffered a massive defeat, winning just 22 seats.

An editorial in the Sena UBT party mouthpiece 'Saamana' asked what was the need for an opposition alliance when its constituents keep fighting with each other instead of fighting against the saffron party.

“In Delhi, both AAP and Congress fought to eliminate each other, making things easier for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah,” the Saamana editorial said.

Similar setbacks among opposition parties also brought disappointment in Maharashtra, where the BJP-led alliance swept the 2024 state assembly elections. The Marathi daily further claimed that if opposition parties failed to learn from the Delhi election results, it would further strengthen the “autocratic rule” under Modi and Shah.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also took a dig at both the grand old party and AAP over their defeat after contesting elections against each other. The National Conference leader said in a post, “Fight more among yourselves!!! (keep fighting each other)".

Saamana also criticised senior social activist Anna Hazare's remarks against Arvind Kejriwal, in which he highlighted that the former's own anti-corruption movement had once paved the way for the AAP chief's rise in politics.

Hazare had last month urged Delhi voters to choose people with clean character and thoughts, who can make sacrifices and bear humiliation for the country.
