India is the second-largest market for ChatGPT maker OpenAI, where its users tripled last year, the firm's founder and CEO Sam Altman said on Wednesday.
Altman is on a whirlwind world tour and arrived in India late Tuesday night. On Wednesday, he met IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw as well as several start-ups and venture capital funds in the country. He is also expected to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
"India is an incredibly important market for AI in general and OpenAI in particular. It's our second-largest market, our users tripled here last year," Altman said during a discussion organised by OpenAI
"But mainly looking at what people are building in India, the stack, the chips, the models, all the incredible applications - India should do everything, India should be one of the leaders of the AI revolution. It's really amazing to see what the country has done..." Altman said.
DeepSeek's models have shown the world that state-of-the-art baseline models can be built at affordable costs, unlike the heavy investments made in building OpenAI's models.
Altman's Asia tour also coincided with the meteoric rise in popularity of DeepSeek. Altman last visited India in June 2023, and his recent world tour is seen by many as a rush to counter the impact of DeepSeek's achievement.
During his last visit to India, Altman had courted controversy when he said that companies around the world, including India, may find it difficult to build a product like ChatGPT.
"It's completely impossible to compete with us in training these core models, and we would advise you not to even attempt it. But it's still your responsibility to try. I really believe in both of these aspects. I think it's quite a futile effort," he had said at an event.
